With Butler: J.B. Sauceda

About J.B.

Jay B.’s job title is a moving target. He’s an entrepreneur who founded Texas Humor and from that built a logistics empire. He’s an author who published two books. He’s a photographer who captured amazing views of Texas from the cockpit of his Cessna. Oh yeah, and he’s a pilot too. He’s now on the move again as the new host of Texas Country Reporter – the iconic Texas travel show.

Jay B. was one of our very first interns, while still a student at UT. Even then, he was hard to pin down. Creative as hell, but business-minded too. He even showed up to the interview in a suit. He made an impression that day and has never stopped impressing us since.

As part of our With Butler series, Jay B. shares why Texas continually fills his cup, sage advice from his Grandma Rita, and how he looks for partners with a “yes, and” mindset.

In a word or two, how would you describe working with Butler?

The beginning.

What’s the one thing you love most about your job?

I love that the entire premise of our show is to give a platform to the positive things happening in the hard to find places around Texas. Every single feature we film fills my cup. I easily have the best job on the planet.

What’s the most valuable piece of advice someone has given you?

Grandma Rita, who was like an adopted Grandma to everyone in my hometown, pulled me in for a hug before I left La Porte to attend UT. She said she only wanted me to remember one thing before I left. She said, "find your bliss." I've thought about that advice almost daily for the 21 years since.

What quality do you value most in a collaborator?

I'm a theatre kid, so if you want to partner with me you've gotta have a "yes and…" mindset. Anything below that bar and I'll jet pack out of the relationship.

Who’s the one person you work best with and why?

I spent nearly 10 years building a company with my wife, Priscilla. I loved how hard and far we could push each other. She's easily my favorite sparring and collaborative partner.
